Description

The Pennsylvania Amateur Championship is one of the longest-running and most prestigious state amateur golf tournaments in the United States, established in 1909 and currently administered by the Pennsylvania Golf Association (PAGA). Originally a match play event, the tournament transitioned in 1966 to a 72-hole stroke play format that remains in use today, drawing a strong field of top amateur golfers primarily from Pennsylvania. The championship rotates among historic and highly acclaimed golf courses such as Merion Golf Club, Oakmont Country Club, Aronimink Golf Club, and Huntingdon Valley Country Club. It is open to male amateurs who are members of clubs affiliated with the Pennsylvania Golf Association, with non-exempt players required to qualify through sectional qualifiers held across the state. Legends of the game such as R. Jay Sigel (the tournament’s record 11-time winner), Art Wall Jr. (Masters champion), and Buddy Marucci (1995 U.S. Amateur runner-up) have all captured the title, underscoring the tournament's elite status in amateur golf. The event is a significant fixture in Pennsylvania and national amateur golf schedules.
