Description

The Masters Tournament is one of the most prestigious golf events in the world and one of the four men's major championships. It was first held in 1934 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, which remains the sole host of the event every year. The tournament was co-founded by legendary amateur golfer Bobby Jones and investment dealer Clifford Roberts. Originally called the Augusta National Invitation Tournament, the name was changed to "The Masters" in 1939, a nod to the "masters of golf" competing in the event. The tournament is known for its rich traditions, including awarding the iconic green jacket to the champion, hosting the Champions Dinner, and the famous Par-3 Contest. It is a 72-hole stroke play event over four days, held annually during the first full week of April. The Masters is famous for its challenging course, meticulous course conditions, and exclusivity. Notable champions include Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus (record six titles), and Tiger Woods, who has set numerous records including the youngest winner and widest winning margin. The tournament does not have a cut line on traditionally expected terms, though only the top 50 players and ties (and anyone within 10 strokes of the leader) after 36 holes continue to the weekend rounds. The Masters also offers exemptions to the winners into future tournaments, a Gold Jacket, and a place in golf history.
